The METARMAP Mini is an A5 METAR map for your desk, shelf or sideboard. On a printed aviation chart, 78 airfields light up, each in the colour of its current weather: blue and green for good VFR conditions, yellow and orange for difficult ones, red when VFR flight is not possible. Strong wind makes an LED blink, thunderstorms make it flash white.

The data comes from the airfieldsโ€™ METAR reports and is refreshed every five minutes. Besides the German airports and military airfields, the map covers airfields in Austria, Switzerland, Czechia, Poland, France, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, among them Salzburg, Zurich and Prague.

It is made for people who fly VFR: private pilots, student pilots, glider and microlight pilots. Flight simmers use it to see what the real weather outside is doing. As a gift for a pilot, it is something they will look at every day.

Setup happens in the browser: with METARMAP Connect you connect to the map over Bluetooth and enter your Wi-Fi. Power comes via USB-C, cable and power supply are included.

How to read the METARMAP Mini

Each LED stands for one airfield and shows the weather category of its current METAR. The categories follow the GAFOR scheme that VFR pilots in Germany know from flight planning: visibility and cloud ceiling give one of five letters, and each letter has its colour.

  • Blue: C (Charlie)Best VFR conditionsVisibility 10 km or more, ceiling 5000 ft or higher
  • Green: O (Oscar)Good VFR conditionsVisibility 8 km or more, ceiling 2000 ft or higher
  • Yellow: D (Delta)DifficultVisibility 5 km or more, ceiling 1000 ft or higher
  • Orange: M (Mike)MarginalVisibility 1.5 km or more, ceiling 500 ft or higher
  • Red: X (X-Ray)No VFR flight possibleVisibility below 1.5 km or ceiling below 500 ft

The worse of the two values always decides. 12 km visibility under a broken layer at 800 ft is Mike, so orange.

When the wind blows at 15 knots or more, or the airfield reports gusts, the LED blinks between its colour and a darker shade. White flashes mean thunderstorms. An LED that stays dark means there is currently no usable report for that airfield. The map fetches the latest METARs every five minutes.

Our article on GAFOR categories covers the limits in detail and why scattered clouds do not count.
