2022
The Beginning
It all started with a personal project: a large-format, handbuilt weather map visualizing live METAR data from airfields. The prototype was rough, unfinished, and never meant for the public. But it hung on the wall, glowed in real time, and showed at a glance what was happening outside. The idea was as simple as it was compelling: aviation weather doesn't belong in an app. It belongs on the wall.
2023
From Project to Product
Through conversations with pilots, flight simulator enthusiasts, and aviation fans, it quickly became clear that the interest in such a map extended far beyond one desk. This response was the catalyst to push development forward seriously. The goal was a version that not only works, but stands as a well-thought-out, high-quality product. The METARMAP in A1 format took shape, with individually addressable LEDs, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a clean, minimalist design.
2024
Production Ready
After intensive development work, numerous iterations, and consistent refinement, the METARMAP entered series production. Every detail was evaluated for function and aesthetics: the color coding of weather categories, configuration via a dedicated web interface, and the quality of the finish. The METARMAP was ready for more than just one person's wall.
2025
A New Format
The natural evolution was a more compact version, for the desk, for the office, for everyone who wants a METARMAP without reserving an entire wall. The METARMAP Mini in A5 format was developed from the ground up with a custom-designed PCB, around 78 airfields from Germany and neighboring countries, USB-C power supply, and the familiar configurability via the web interface. By the end of 2025, the Mini entered series production.
2026
Today
Since early 2026, the METARMAP Mini has been officially available, starting with the Germany variant. Further European country variants are already in planning and development. Every device is developed, assembled, and tested in Leipzig. What began in 2022 as a personal hobby project is today a real product, built by people who fly themselves, who check what's happening outside, and who know exactly why a glowing map on the wall is worth more than any app.
