How the decoder works
Enter an airfield's ICAO identifier, for example EGLL for London Heathrow, and click Decode. The decoder fetches the current TAF and splits it into its groups. Below them the forecast appears as a list of periods. You can also paste a complete TAF from a briefing.
Change groups only list what changes. So the decoder works out the complete weather for each period, the base forecast with every change up to that point, and grades it into a GAFOR category. Temporary deviations are indented.
The structure of a TAF
| Example | Meaning |
|---|---|
TAF | TAF, or TAF AMD for a forecast reissued early |
EDDP | ICAO code of the airfield |
291700Z | Issue time: day, hour and minute in UTC |
2918/3024 | Validity: from the 29th at 18 UTC to the 30th at 24 UTC |
24010KT 9999 SCT040 | Base forecast with wind, visibility, weather and cloud |
FM301200 | from the 30th at 12:00 UTC a new forecast applies |
BECMG 3002/3004 | gradual, lasting change during the period |
TEMPO 3014/3018 | temporary deviation during the period |
PROB30 | change with a 30 or 40 % probability |
TX25/3014Z | expected maximum and minimum temperature with time |
Every abbreviation and its meaning is in the list of METAR abbreviations.
The weather as a map
The METARMAP fetches the METARs of around 80 airfields every five minutes and shows each one as an LED in its GAFOR colour.
